Hoping to pay to park on Newark? You’re in Luck!

Take a look at what’s being installed along Newark Avenue! Not only do we get a new, ugly concrete sidewalk but we get to pay to park next to it now. Huzzah!
Incredible images of Jersey City from above. (Kinda, not really.)

Was just pointed to this site by @HipCat on Twitter and the definition of the images you can mess around with are pretty incredible. As I’m sure you’ve gathered, it’s airiel imagery of a collection of cities and the quality blows away Google Earth. You can zoom in and actually get a better view of JC than above but the damn thing kept zooming back out as I attemped to snag a screen grab. Jersey City clearly prefers to maintain a mystery to the outside world. Anyway, enjoy.
This has nothing to do with Jersey City….but shouldn’t it?

A co-worker bought me a set of dirty Legos from a store up the street. The best part, by far, was the pamphlet included within. Check out that motley group of future ax murderers.
Your Saturday Night, Defined

There’s a hell of a Friday night ahead of us, folks. From the first post-work, sun-setting moments of Friday through the first dagger bright instants of Saturday morning force their way through the late deep night blackness, merriment. Perhaps I’m taking this all a bit too seriously but, seriously, why not? Here’s what you’re doing:
Zeppelin Hall Grand Opening - So I was a week off. The important thing here is beer. Or, as it will be known from now forward in one corner of our little neighborhood, “bier.” The Zeppelin Hall Biergarten has arrived my dear neighbors and this Friday night, it pulls away it’s trench coat to expose itself in all of its sudsy glory to those that have eagerly awaited its frothy goodness. SEXY.
Art House Summer Blowout - Christine Goodman once again opens the doors to Art House Productions and welcomes we citizens into its embrace for an evening of drinks, dancing and whatever else there is to enjoy once you’ve had your fill of the latter. $5 at the door has you covered for the night. Not too shabby a deal. All the info you could possibly hope for is here.
“Party of the 7 Bs” @ Lex Leonard Gallery - Once you’ve had your fill of bier and dancing, the second half of your night begins as “The Party of the 7 Bs” kicks off at the Lex Leonard Gallery. It’s BYO, so make sure you prepare ahead of time. Lex put the details in words far finer than I could hope to muster at the late evening hour during which I write this, so I divert to him:
The art of celebration is a legitimate one, but one that seldom gets recognized. So recognize. Revelers are a subculture, but one that seldom gets recognized. So recognize. Parties @ 143 (as is the case with parties at other such venues) belong to a class of undefined artistry. If you can recognize that we are connected culturally and I invite you to join my periodical “feast of friends”. So this Friday after Claudia’s B-Day Celeb @ Lucky’s and the Arthouse Party, come to 143 with generous intentions because we all know there is no such thing as a free lunch. I’m as much a businessman as I am a lover of leisure. Something else that should not only be recognized but remembered. This Friday night be mindful of this as you enter 143.

Zeppelin Hall Biergarten Might Actually Be Opening
We’ve all been eagerly awaiting it. A Jersey City beer garden to call our own. For a while, it seemed to exist in the realm of possibility alongside Bigfoot and a Jersey City Whole Foods. Bullshit. However, chatter seems to point to Zeppelin Hall Biergarten opening as early as today. With the promise of beers never before seen in the Jersey City wild and more space than is reasonable, it’s hard not to be excited about this one.
My buddy Leigh swung by there last weekend and grabbed a bunch of photos. Here’s what he had to say about the joint:
It definitely doesn’t seem ready for opening for at least a few more weeks, but it’s possible they could whip things together in a few days if they really wanted to. We walked around the back yard and saw the picnic tables and peeked through the windows to see the various bars and stage. It has a ton of potential if they ever get the place open, but I also wonder how they’ll ever do enough business to KEEP it open. As it is, it seems like they’ve got room for a couple hundred people, and I can’t imagine when they would ever draw that kind of crowd–save for the odd corporate event or whatever. Obviously they don’t need to fill the place every day, but it would take quite a few beer drinkers just to make it seem anything more than empty.
As Leigh points out, the place seems a bit large, given the crowd you would expect. Hope you’re all ready to pitch in and drink. Check out the photos below. Read more…
Great Apartment Up for Grabs in JC

Emily August is looking for someone to fill her apartment. It’s at a great location and a pretty damn good deal. You should rent it and then live in it starting on July 1st. More info here.
Powerhouse “RE-ENERGIZED!!” To the X-Treme, I can only assume.

The Powerhouse is a cool-as-shit looking building. However, I’ll be honest in saying that I’ve paid all but no attention to what’s going on with it. Likely because I assumed it would either A) have no effect on me and B) that whatever is eventually done with it will probably be some bullshit that everyone will invariably be disappointed in.
There was chatter of it being a museum a while back, I think (I have done no research to verify this) and recently a friend joked (I hope) that they were going to make it into an Old Navy or something. I don’t know. I saw a few headlines recently from The JCI that it’s eventual fate is still a bit up in the air.
Call me pessimistic, but I’ve really stopped expecting much from that part of the city. Sorry. I’m sure it’s great and I admit it’s 99% likely that I have no clue what I’m talking about but I am probably representative of most people in the area in that regard so I’m comfortable in my ignorance.
Anyway, I saw this poster on the PATH this morning on my way to WTC. And it pretty much totally spits in the face of my above assumptions like the total prick that it is. According to said poster, the big fucker is set to open this summer at a center for culture, entertainment and the arts. Who am I to argue with a poster? Especially one that’s so blue, orange and green?
OK, I just took the few seconds necessary to actually go to the website that the poster instructed me to (this one) and now have the slightest clue what I’m talking about. You’re experiencing this in REAL TIME folks. THAT is hard-hitting journalism. See that photo up there? It’s the revitalized powerhouse from Baltimore. They stuck a Hard Rock Cafe and an ESPN Zone into the thing. I’m sure that thrills everyone. Of course, I get that shit like this is good for the local economy and all that jazz but fuck. An ESPN ZONE? Really? (Of course, being a totally hypocrite, if they were to put one in, I’d probably go for Red Sox/Yankee games or something and be exactly the kind of person I am criticizing.) ["Editor's" Note: I'm all over the place folks. Sorry about that!]
Man, what the hell am I trying to get across with this post? I’ve pretty much lost that train of thought. Maybe it went to have a Jager Bomb and some (x-treme) curly fries at ESPN Zone. Anyway, there’s a poster on the train and I took pictures because I wanted to post something before the week was up.The word “commitment” comes to mind.
Also, anyone else disappointed in the new Newark sidewalks? I was hoping they’d look nicer. OK, now that I’ve spiraled into whining about new sidewalks, I’ll call this one a wrap. Poster photos below with close-ups of the text so you can read it just like you were on the train. It’s kind of like virtual reality but better.
JC Fridays Tonight! Also, bagels at 2am!

I really should have written about this days ago. I know. What can I say. Fucking vampires and sharks, man. Fucking vampires and sharks. Regardless, there’s a lot of interesting shit going down tonight. I’ll be honest in saying that I haven’t had a chance to appropriately delve into what I’m going to do tonight but one thing I definitely want to check out is a surprisingly cool sounding event that The JC Museum is hosting. Details below. Also, even though it’s been illegitimately teased before, Grove Hot Bagels (corner of Newark & Grove) will begin their late night hours TONIGHT. What better way to recover from a night of col air and hard drinking than some hot food?If you’re out and about and excited about something, hit me at @DrawAndQuarter on Twee-tah.

“Trouble with Water” Screening. This Saturday @ 1pm.

Two and a half years ago, my friend Anthony and I took a road trip that eventually led us to New Orleans. The state of destruction still evident was jarring and moving but so was the spirit and general demeanor of the people living there. It was one of the best times I’d had in a while and it was absolutely the people we ran into that made it so. While I can’t say whether this is at all appropriate to the story of “Trouble with Water,” I can say it left an impression lasting enough on me that this is one Jersey City event I definitely plan on supporting. Hope you will too.
On Saturday, at 1pm, LITM will be hosting a screening of what is seemingly a pretty incredible film. Leah from LITM was nice enough to send along the details:
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, this astonishingly powerful documentary takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen. Incorporating remarkable home footage shot by Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist trapped with her husband in the 9th ward‚ directors/producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal (producers of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine) weave this insiders view of Katrina with a devastating portrait of the hurricane’s aftermath.
Producer, Tia Lessin, WILL BE HERE at LITM after the screening to answer questions and talk about her experience putting together this film
We are asking for a minimum donation of $5.00 at the door.
Proceeds will benefit the NOLA Preservation Society - The Jersey City based non-profit organization, promoting the rebuilding of New Orleans and the preservation and education of its unique culture.
This is the third year they will be traveling to New Orleans. First there were 15 volunteers, then 30, and now they plan to bring 100 Jersey City High School kids to New Orleans to volunteer at the end of June.
Its a great cause, its an amazing film - and a really special opportunity to speak with someone like Tia Lessin, who gets behind some very important and still controversial issues.
Tickets can be purchased online here.

Readers contribute to the street art story.

Credit: ghacked
You guys and gals seem to be digging this street art story. In case you missed it, “ghacked” posted the above image to the comments of the last post I did on the whole thing. (I was going to link to it but then realized how ridiculous that would be give that it’s plainly visible right down there.)
From there, Craige Moore started a Flickr Group to bring together not only this recent trend but the collection of all art that’s muscling its way into the outdoor space of our little neighborhood. Check it out here.
Reader contributions on the rise. I dig it! Remember, just hit me up if you’re interested in contributing anything to the site at James@drawandquarter.com Whatever you’re into doing is pretty much cool with me.
